Biography

Justice Paige Petersen has served on the Utah Supreme Court since December 2017. Before joining the Court, she served as a judge on Utah’s Third Judicial District Court, where she presided over both civil and criminal matters, including the Summit County Drug Court. She is widely recognized for her extensive public service, distinguished prosecutorial career, and commitment to improving the legal profession.

Justice Petersen grew up in Castle Dale and Price, Utah. She earned an Associate of Science from the College of Eastern Utah (now Utah State University Eastern), graduated summa cum laude from the University of Utah in 1995, and received her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1999. After law school, she clerked for two years for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.

Following her clerkship, Justice Petersen practiced civil litigation with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York City before joining the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, where she prosecuted organized crime and international narcotics trafficking. She later served as a prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague, Netherlands, participating in the successful prosecution of the former Serbian Chief of Police for crimes related to ethnic cleansing and mass murder in Kosovo. After returning to Utah, she served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Salt Lake City, prosecuting violent crimes before being appointed to the district court.

Governor Gary R. Herbert appointed Justice Petersen to the Utah Supreme Court in 2017 following the retirement of Chief Justice Christine Durham. Since joining the Court, she has become a leading voice on lawyer well-being, judicial administration, and access to justice while continuing to author opinions across a broad range of legal subjects. She also serves on the Utah Judicial Council and teaches as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law.
